So what did Mrs. C. do tonight? Having read the book, The World is Flat, when it was just published, I enjoyed listening to Mr. Friedman talk about his work at MIT.
WORLD IS FLAT – VIDEO Friedman Speaking at MIT
My Notes...
Individuals and small groups can globalize themselves -- every color of the rainbow who can plug and play together.
10 FLATTENING FORCES:
1. 11/9/89 Berlin Wall came down & Windows Operating System ships
2. 8/9/95 Netscape goes public - browser gave us first commercial browser which brought internet alive -Open standards transmission protocols
-dotCom boom - investment in fiber optic cable over a trillion dollars => made us all next door neighbors - nobody planned it => free communication
3. Mid-1990’s 3. Workflow … software etc. Middleware – people are able to work together with other people on more stuff than ever before.
Above three created a GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR COLLABORATION
4. Outsourcing (Y2K)– collaboration empowered by this platform
5. Offshoring (China joins World Trade)
6. Open Sourcing (Geeks working on Linux, Firefox Stanford and New Zealand students working together, MIT Open University) – hard to beat free
7. Supply Chaining – Walmart – China makes when removed from shelf. Walmart doesn’t make anything.
8. In-Sourcing – UPS – Your World Synchronized – Internal Logistics for companies. UPS employees are fixing your broken Toshiba in the hanger where the UPS plane is sitting. NIKE shoes packed and shipped by UPS employees. Companies don’t touch their own products.
9. Informing – GOOGLE (Search) – I can inform myself. TIVO for entertainment.
10. VOIP & File Sharing – Turbo charging above 6 forms of collaboration
2000 – 3 Convergences
1. All 10 flatteners converged – tipping point – started working together. Complementaries of these 10 items starting to work together – time, distance, geography and language -- no longer hindrances to sharing.
2. We all have to innovate to this new platform – horizontalizing ourselves. Value created – who you connect and collaborate with. To get productivity boost – have to redesign vertical management practices – habits have to change – we are at the beginning of horizontalizing ourselves. Million changes around horizontalizing
3. India, China, Soviet Empire open up – 300 million people (of 3 billion who are ready to play) walked onto the playing field just when it has been flattened.
This huge triple convergence will shape this brief history of the 21st Century. Mother of all inflection points as big as Gutenberg and the printing press. Gets disguised as political perfect storm – 9/11, ENRON, dotCOM bust. Right when the world got flat, we’re looking in another way – the businesses know what’s going on – and nobody has told the kids.
The book is a effort to tell the kids what world they are growing up in…
IT Revolution was just the warm-up – forging, sharpening and distribution of the tools of collaboration. NOW is the real IT Revolution.
Hello All,
We had a great time at a cottage we rented on Keuka Lake. I "played" with a digital video camera and Adobe Premiere video editing software -- both will be used in the library in the 2006-07 school year.
I created a little "movie" using Visual Communicator. This movie includes photos, a harmonica improvisation, and a narration by my son, Charlie. Click here to view the movie!
Hope you are enjoying your summer vacation! Bring in some vacation pictures and we'll create "storytelling" movies in September.
Hugs,
Mrs. C.
Hello All,
If I didn't get a chance to say good-bye to you, then I will send hugs via my blog entry. I wish everyone a peaceful summer. Make sure to keep reading. Feel free to email me about your adventures (sachauncey@gmail.com).
I will be doing some work at the Grandview Library this summer. All of the teacher materials will be moved into Mrs. Cobin's old office and the entire library will become student space. I have some great plans for the new area -- if a grant which I submitted to Senator Morahan is approved, we will have a 2nd Smart Board in the library. This will support splitting into groups to work on various types of projects.
My family will be going on vacation from July 1st through July 14th. We will be spending one week on Keuka Lake (one of the Finger Lakes) and another week at our farm house which is between Ithaca and Elmira.
I will enjoy walking along the lake, swimming (Actually I'm not much of a swimmer, but I do a mean doggy paddle.), and reading! I have six books I plan to read over the next few weeks. I will also be sketching out the 2006-07 school year for each grade.
Leave me a comment or send me an email to let me know what you are doing over the summer vacation. I'll be blogging over the summer, so take a look now and then.
Many hugs,
Mrs. Chauncey
NOTE: Our WNBC visit has bee postponed -- we are hoping to share our work in the fall!
Hello All,
Last week I received a call from Courtney Karter who works for WNBC. She read the May 30th Journal News Article "Invasion of the IPod Kids" and asked if she could interview some of our students about their experiences with podcasting.
Several of our students in grades 1-3 who published works along with podcasts in the Grandview Newspaper will be meeting with Ms. Karter in the library on Monday, June 19th. They are excited and a bit nervous about the prospect of appearing on television.
I am proud of everyone who worked on newspaper articles, research projects, and challenge work in the library this year! What a treat to show off your work.
Hugs,
Mrs. Chauncey
Hello My Wonderful Students,
I cannot believe it is June 5th. Tomorrow is play day and I'll be working at the "Flamingo" station. Believe it or not, I was working on plans for the 2006-07 school year this past weekend. I also picked up a couple of "best sellers" to share during our last two weeks of school. The book, Walter, the Farting Dog, did not strike me as a "Mrs. Chauncey" kind of book, but I decided to let down my hair and live dangerously. (They just published a sequel, sigh.)
Hello Everyone,
Last Friday I had the opportunity to return to Syracuse University's School of Information Studies (SU IST) to share the work we are doing in the Grandview Library. About 15 graduate students, some already working as librarians, attended the program.
Everyone was so impressed with the work you are doing. I gave each of the participants a sign-in for the Sea Turtle and Chimpanzee graphic organizers. They will pretend they are students and try them out.
In the picture on the left, I am standing with Dr. Ruth Small. She is a professor at the SU IST. I graduated from this school many years ago. It was such a great experience to spend some time there again. (Click the picture to see a larger copy.)
Hope you are having a great weekend.
Hugs, Mrs. C.
Hello All,
This weekend, I began working on a prototype for the Digital Journal which will be used by the 3rd graders and their teachers next year. On Monday, I will share my ideas and get input from the teachers. You can take a look at the beginnings of this project by clicking on the image.
I would love to finish a sample in time for my current 3rd graders to try it out! If any of you would like to work with it over the summer, I will set you up with a Student ID and password. Just let me know. I'll monitor your work and give you feedback.
Many Hugs,
Mrs. Chauncey
Hello All,
What a busy week I've had. I decided to give my computer a break over the Mother's Day weekend -- so I didn't even write in my blog. I know that many of you are enjoying the great weather which means spending more time outside during recess and after school. That is exactly what you should be doing. I look forward to hearing about your adventures -- so blog on a rainy day :) I just finished reviewing the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Graphic Organizer entries that the third graders have been working on. Great work my wonderful students!
Google Earth is now available on the 4 desktop computers in the library!
After 20 years we are having new siding put on our house. The work starts tomorrow. I'll share some pictures this weekend.
Hugs,
Mrs. Chauncey
